Accounts vary, but it seems likely that 17 Fall River militiamen beat off a dawn attack by as many as 150 British soldiers, who arrived by boat and left the same way, chased back to sea by volleys of gunfire. The fleeing British left two of their dead on shore. While no one is now alive who remembers that famous day and year, on May 31, 1778, a doughty force of Fall River militia stood off an invading force of British lobsterbacks, driving them back into the bay.
